Recent Cases

  Each client is unique.  Earlier results do not guarantee similar outcomes in the future, but the following are selected case summaries of Steve's work.

v      Steve recovered hundreds of thousands of dollars for commercial clients.

v      Steve has represented various banking institutions in Rhode island.

v      Steve proved damages of $848,000 obtaining a federal court Admiralty award in binding arbitration for an upstate New York tourist to Rhode Island who was severely injured on a charter fishing trip in the Atlantic Ocean.  The tourist was thrown from an unprotected upper bunk by the maneuvering of the vessel into the sea.

v      In federal court litigation, Steve sued several tobacco companies over the wrongful death of deceased smokers.  The plaintiffs' suits were ultimately unsuccessful, but nonetheless landmark and groundbreaking in Rhode Island.

v      On behalf of several small business owners, Steve obtained renewal of patents and enforced those patents by declaratory judgment in the U.S. Federal Court of Rhode Island preserving the clients' local and international trade and the use of each client's trade name.

v      On behalf of a new business entrepreneur, Steve negotiated patent licensing and royalty agreements for the unique idea of controlling the flame level in outdoor gas grills, and helped several business owners launch new franchise-based firms including office-supply stores, sport memorabilia shops, gasoline-service stations and other businesses.

v      Along with co-counsel from Indiana, Steve obtained an injunction and later a $65 million commercial fraud judgment in the United States Federal District Court for Southern California on behalf of the Commercial Assigned Risk Insurance Plan, headquartered in Rhode Island, protecting their market in commercial trucking insurance.

v      Steve successfully litigated several human rights claims such as age and sex discrimination on behalf of both employers and employees at the Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights and the Rhode Island Superior Court.

v      Steve resolved by multi-state litigation both embezzlement and accountancy malpractice claims made by his small business clients in Rhode Island, resulting in the recoveries of over $250,000.00.

v      Steve obtained a products liability jury award in the amount of $185,000.00 for a Pawtucket grandmother whose right thumb, index finger and related nerves were severely lacerated and permanently damaged; she was using an "Osterizer" Blender making a "coffee cabinet milk shake" for her three grandchildren in her home when the blades disengaged into her hand.

v      Through settlements and private binding arbitration in Rhode Island, Steve obtained a $350,000.00 resolution for an Aquidneck Island private entrepreneur who performed high tech soldering work and whose right hand was permanently damaged in an automobile crash.

v      Steve obtained a $1,800,000.00 products liability jury verdict for a coast-to-coast long-haul trucker and his wife; because of a defective safety belt system the trucker permanently lost his ability to work and perform daily activities when he was thrown out of the truck's bunk compartment and onto the protruding instrument panel of a Freightliner "Condo" sleeper cab.

v      Steve recovered $300,000 for his client after a jury verdict finding a brain injury to the client resulting from head trauma at work arising from negligent and improper working conditions.

Steve is married, has two adult sons and resides in West Kingston, Rhode Island.  He is a Past President of the Kingston Congregational Church (1999), a Past President of the Rotary Club of Wakefield, R.I. (2003), and currently the Secretary of the West Kingston Fire Department.
